2020 Global 5K FAQs

Girl Up Global 5K FAQs

Participating in the Global 5K this year? We’ve rounded up FAQs to help make your experience a success!

We know not everyone has a pedometer, so we’ve put together estimates for how long you could expect to do alternative activities that are approximately equal to a 5K (~3,500 steps):

Activities to get you up and moving:

Who can participate in the Global 5K?

Anyone! We encourage everyone to run and fundraise either as a solo participant or part of a team. Companies should register together as a team.

I have a commitment on May 16, 2020. Can I complete the 5K another day?

Yes! Our goal is to have as many people active in their own communities on the 16th as possible, but we know things come up. You’re welcome to complete your 5K as part of the Girl Up Global 5K on a day that best suits you.

What is the Global 5K fundraising for?

Funds raised from the 2020 Global 5K will go to Girl Up’s work supporting girls’ health and safety. Global health crises put women and girls at a greater risk of gender-based violence, reduce access to reproductive health resources, and with increased work at home, girls can be forced to drop out of school or be pressured into child marriage.

Our company cannot compete in the Girl Up Global 5k, but still wants to support the Global 5k. Can we donate or give an in-kind donation instead?

Yes! You can donate here or email Kirsten McCullers about in-kind donations. We want to be able to reward everyone who participates with incentives when they hit certain fundraising milestones. Let us know if you would be interested in offering prizes to our community.

What are some ways people can give?

  • Ask people to donate directly through your personal fundraising page
  • Have your supporters text “Girl Up” to 501501  to donate to the Girl Up Global 5K
    • In order for Girl Up to credit your fundraising page with the money please have your supporter send you their receipt and send that information to fundraise@girlup.org telling us what page the funds should be credited to.
  • Ask people to donate on girlup.org/global5k making sure to credit the donation to you or your team
  • Ask people to help you fundraise by using the Venmo app. It’s quick and easy and there aren’t any processing fees!
  • Ask supporters to send a check to Girl Up, 1750 Pennsylvania Ave. NE, Suite 300, Washington. D.C. 20006. In the memo please have supporters write Global 5K with the name of the fundraiser it should go to.

How to Participate

Here are some ways to complete your 5K indoors or out:

  • Walk/run/cycle outside and track it on your pedometer
  • Facetime or call a family member or friend while walking
  • Walk in place while watching a show or listening to a podcast
  • At home with family? Have them join your 5k and walk/run/bike together
  • Complete a Free online workout or yoga class on YouTube
  • Follow a guided mediation or look up journaling prompts

To complete a 5K without a pedometer, you will need to do the following activities for the amount of times below. Don’t forget a 5K is 3,500 steps!

  • Run for 30 minutes
  • Walk for 45 minutes
  • Cycle for 15 minutes
  • Do an online workout class or meditation for 30-45 minutes
