Los Deportes No Tienen Género

In Girl Up PAF we consider that motor skills can be developed with experience, which means you are not necessarily born with them.

  1. Story
  2. Sports

Sports have no gender

Sports are a very controversial issue between women and men because unfortunately stereotypes establish certain parameters in whih it is females are considered to be less capable to do some sport activities. In Girl Up PAF we consider that motor skills can be developed with experience, which means you are not necessarily born with them. Therefore, a woman has the opportunity to do a sports just as well as men do. We want to change and eliminate these stereotyped roles of both sexes in sports.

Hence, we organized a mixed volleyball tournament which started on February 25th, 2019 and will end on April 5th, 2019. The matches take place in our High School called Preparatoria Alfa Fundación, and have a duration of 16 minutes. So in total we will have 24 games and a final match. In total, seven teams composed of both men and women signed up, which made us really happy and impressed, since we were expecting less participation.

In addition, we have had the chance of getting one of our leaders in the tournament, who share her story in sports with us: “Firstly, I am very happy and satisfied with the participation of women in the tournament. Sports represent a very big part of my life because I have been involved in them since elementary school. It was in that moment when I realized that one of my greatest passions was volleyball. I am conscious of the lack of participation of women in sports because I have witnessed it since I started playing. It’s sad, really sad, to see so few of us in these kinds of activities, so I want to transform it into power through my experience. Through the activities that we have organized as a club, women feel more confident in themselves. I am convinced that we can stop stereotypes from being an obstacle for women to participate in sports.”, said Melissa Aldana Almanza, president of Girl Up PAF and member of the volleyball team of her high school.

Also, one of the teams is integrated by teachers who joined the cause to motivate the students to participate and watch the games. Likewise, we believe that the impact of the tournament was amazing because we have had the participation of the principal of Preparatoria Alfa Fundación, Claudia Zuñiga who shares her perspective of this topic: “Female empowerment must begin through several areas. Sports are only one of them. I consider that outstanding in sports also empowers women. We have seen Lorena Ochoa or Ana Gabriela Guevara winning world championships, and they continue to inspire many young mexican girls who know that it is now possible to get so successful in sports. We must motivate and reward all pioneer women to start with the change of mentality.” Finally, she added: “I loved that the idea came from Girl Up PAF and above all, that students (women and men) have responded very well to this initiative. Also, I liked that teachers participated, because in this way we all support the cause.”

Although fundraising was a big part of this initiative, our main objective was to raise awareness among students and people who follow us in our social media, about how women are able to participate in sports like soccer, volleyball or basketball, because we have the same possibilities to stand out and belong to any team. We hope that with this tournament women will feel more confident in sports and manage to break as many paradigms as possible because sports have no gender.

Follow us on our social media, @girluppaf. We want more clubs to join this and organize activities related to sports in their communities.
