Justice for Magui

Salome Beyer is a 2020-2021 Girl Up Teen Advisor Co-Chair from Colombia.

  1. Story

Ever since I began my work with Girl Up in 2014, and I know that this has been the experience of many other members, I have received an immense amount of backlash and critiques. Many people have doubted the importance of the Gender Equality Movement, and have solely linked Gender Inequality with far away nations. However, the truth is that the importance and relevance of this movement in our continent have never been more important. Today, that is clearer than ever.

Support Magui’s family

Some months after it happened, I became aware of the terrible and violent femicide that one of our own in Girl Up Latin America experienced. Although we already knew that femicide is anything but uncommon, the rates of it sky-high and that it would eventually come knocking at our door, the fact that it has happened doesn’t make it less terrible. We knew that it was coming, but we’re not any less outraged and saddened. Magdalena was murdered. One less fighter, one less leader, one less voice, another life lost. Another warrior was taken from us too soon, another life with infinite potential has been snatched from the movement, and there has been no justice. This is why we have to keep saying, without fear, #NiUnaMenos. We have to keep raising our voices, the voices of a global movement, to make them understand that we will not allow this anymore.

Latin America has been a continent in constant conflict ever since the European settlers invaded it. Whether it is Brazil, Colombia, Argentina, or in this case Mexico, systematic abuses are seen, felt, and experienced every single day. Us Latina girls and women are strong, resilient, and loud. Let us keep being these wonderful things, and let us use our voices for one of our own. Justice of Magdalena. Justice for  Magui. Justice for girls. We deserve to have the guarantee of a safe and violence-free life the moment we’re born. Today, we have one less. But I’m certain that tomorrow, we will have thousands more ready to honor Magui’s life and use her loss as fuel to keep the fire of equality alive. Because for the thousandth time, we do not want one less. #NiUnaMenos.
