Girl Up Academy

Leadership lies at the heart of Girl Up’s global movement of changemakers. That’s why we’re excited to announce the launch of our brand-new online leadership course this May! This interactive course will provide skills-based activities to guide our members on their unique leadership journeys all around the world. It is the first online evidence-based leadership course of its kind, informed by the neuroscience of learning and best practices, that will be globally available.

Centered around Girl Up’s three-pronged leadership framework, this comprehensive course, made possible thanks to support from Hasbro, builds upon each participant’s abilities in self-leadership, peer leadership, and change leadership through a digital-first format that can be accessed by every Girl Up leader everywhere and adapted across the advocacy issues they care about.

Exclusively available on Girl Up Academy—Girl Up’s virtual learning platform—the course will equip members with the knowledge, support, and resources to drive social change in their communities. Specifically, it  will help participants:

  • Build a toolkit of leadership skills to catalyze and support their lifelong journey as a Leader of Self, Leader of Peers, and Leader of Change
  • Leverage tools that will support their advocacy, organizing, storytelling, and fundraising efforts
  • Connect and collaborate with Girl Up’s global community of changemakers in 130 countries
Girl Up Oceania Regional Leader Ashleigh describes who a changemaker is to her during a unit of the new Leadership Course on Girl Up Academy.

Organized around modules that promote self-awareness, collaboration, and creative problem solving, the Leadership Course gives Girl Up members tangible skills to make a positive impact in their life and in the lives of those around them. They will gain and apply skills to advance gender equality through advocacy across a range of issues, including but not limited to gender-based violence, sexual and reproductive health, rights and justice, climate change, girls’ education, mental health and wellness, and addressing the gender gap in STEM and Sports.

Learners can decide to complete the course individually at their own pace or collectively with their Girl Up Club.  The course includes interactive leadership development materials, ranging from animated lessons and live-action videos to engaging exercises and reflection-based discussion boards.  Additionally, every component of the course features stories and lessons from Girl Up leaders just like them, as well as profiles of women activists from all around the world. At the end of the course, participants who complete every module will submit their own project plan and receive a well-earned certificate highlighting their growth and expertise in leadership.

Girl Up’s Leadership Course is critical in developing, mobilizing, and activating a powerful generation of youth changemakers who will continue to develop their own leadership while advancing gender equality in their communities and around the world. Special thanks to Girl Up Advisory Board and girls’ leadership expert Julie Carrier for her collaboration and contribution to the design of the course.

Stay tuned for more updates on Girl Up Academy, including new course offerings and translations for even more ways to create sustained social change in your communities.
