I first attended the Girl Up Leadership Summit in 2016, not really knowing what I was getting into. I had never been to any big conventions or multi-day events before, so I really didn’t know what to expect. At the time, I had only learned about Girl Up eight months prior to the summit, and I had only started a club four months before the event, so Girl Up was super new to me. Before my first Summit, I wish that I had known to prioritize the extra activities that Girl Up offers. Typically, on Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday night Girl Up offers some fun events like an ice cream social. My first year, I was too exhausted after the regular programming to make it to those extra events, but you do not want to miss out on them. Those events are the best times to create new friendships with your fellow Summit attendees, and they are super fun!

The summit is definitely a whirlwind event, but it is totally worth all of the exertion. Every year, I continue to come back to the summit because I know that I’ll get some awesome swag, I’ll be inspired by amazing speakers, and I will get to see my Girl Up family. I have created a network of friends in Girl Up, and this is the only opportunity that I have to see all of them in one week.

Here are some things that you can expect at the summit:

  1. The schedule is packed, so plan your bathroom breaks in advance and don’t expect much down time! Also, you’ll do a lot of walking, so wear comfy shoes.
  2. Every single speaker is phenomenal, and you should be prepared to take notes. You never know what advice will come in handy during your future career.
  3. Prepare to meet hundreds of passionate girl leaders! They all have some useful knowledge to offer, so be sure to make a lot of connections. I even recommend writing out cards in advance with your name, email, club. That way, you don’t have to write down your contact information every 5 minutes.

I am so excited to attend the summit this year for my third year in a row, and I cannot wait to meet all of my fellow attendees. Be sure to say hi to me if you see me around, I always love to discuss Girl Up!
