Here are some of our favorite moments:School CycleDid you know that distance is one of the biggest barriers for girls’ education around the world? We know that when girls have access to education, so many doors are opened. That’s why in February, Girl Up donated 250 bikes to girls in Guatemala to make getting to school easier through the School Cycle initiative. Now, we are going even bigger; Girl Up is fundraising to send 1,000 bikes to girls in Malawi in 2018. At this year’s Leadership Summit, over 300 passionate girl advocates gathered in Washington, D.C. to talk to their members of Congress about issues they care about. The girls heard from inspiring speakers including Girl Up experts, Teen Advisors, celebrity champions, corporate executives, and other change-makers to gain core leadership skills. The girls also gained experience interacting with members of Congress on Capitol Hill, advocating for the Protecting Girls’ Access to Education in Vulnerable Settings Act.WiSci Girls STEAM Camp in MalawiGirl UP hosted the 2017 WiSci STEAM Camp in Malawi for girls to enhance their skills and leadership potential. The camp focuses on exposing girls to STEAM – science, technology, math, art, and design. This year, WiSci STEAM Camp brought together 98 high school girls from all over the African continent (Malawi, Rwanda, Uganda, Zambia, Tanzania and Liberia) and the United States, where they formed friendships, learned new skills like coding and app development, crafted their leadership potential, and geared up to change the world.International Day of the Girl/ #GIRLHEROThis year, on International Day of the Girl, Girl Up encouraged girls to post videos about their #GIRLHERO, and the girls responded in force! They took over social media, telling us stories about their inspiring mothers, sisters, athletes, celebrity faves, world leaders, and more. We also gathered feminist inspiration through quotes, books, movies, and more from our Girl Up Club members.#DreamBigPrincess Disney PartnershipGirl Up launched its Disney partnership with #DreamBigPrincess, a photo campaign that raised over one million dollars by getting one million shares or likes on various social media platforms. In November, Girl Up launched a photo exhibit at the United Nations, using the power of imagery to celebrate inspiring stories from around the world that encourage kids to dream big. The exhibit featured images by 19 photographers from 15 countries, showcasing inspiring stories of real-world girls and women.Want more? Check out this video of our Top 5!BONUS MOMENT: Girl Up Learning Trip to Uganda with Celebrity Champion Cara DelevingneIn January, Girl Up Celebrity Champion and girl hero Cara Delevingne traveled with Girl Up and UNHCR to Uganda refugee settlements. Cara talked with refugee girls who had just arrived in South Sudan about their journeys and hopes for their futures. Cara and the Girl Up team visited refugee settlements throughout the region to raise awareness about the South Sudanese refugee crisis and learn about UNHCR’s response and education programming for refugee girls.
