Mariam Farooq

Hey! My name is Mariam Farooq. I’m 16 years and am a junior at West Island School in Hong Kong.

I first heard about Girl Up through my cousin while visiting the U.S. As soon as I heard what Girl Up was all about, I immediately knew that I wanted to be a part of this movement. Shortly afterwards, I started Hong Kong’s first Girl Up club at my school. Almost 2 years later, we have held plenty of fundraising and advocacy events such as bake sales, a movie screening and booths at our schools Christmas Markets and Spring Fair etc.

Aside from Girl Up, I am excited to be working as a social media admin for New Day, a local charity that is also dedicated to improving the lives of women and girls in crisis across Asia. Additionally, I like to take part in events or movements that will help others for the greater good; an example of this is Walk4 Syria. Other activities that I am involved in include our schools connections team, hockey team as well as this I attend a religious and Arabic class at my local mosque on a weekly basis.

In my free time, I love to bake and explore culinary creations, watch tennis and spend excessive amounts of time on Pinterest.

Coming from a diverse background I have realized that the only way to make change is if we work together unanimously. Girl Up has allowed me to get involved in helping girls’ situation across the globe but has also connected me with like-minded and inspiring girls who are working towards the same goal. I am so honored and excited to be working as a 2017-2018 Teen Advisor and cannot wait to see what the upcoming year has to hold.
